Salted fish is a common food that is popular in the south of China. It is chewy (有嚼劲的) and adds a salty flavor to other dishes. But eating too much salted fish can give you cancer, according to a list of cancer-causing foods that was recently published by the China Food and Drug Administration.
Salted fish is produced with a large amount of salt, which later turns into nitrites (亚硝酸盐). When nitrites reach our stomach, they turn into another kind of chemical that can cause cancer, Huang Yufang from the Cancer Center of Guangzhou Medical University told Xinhua News Agency.
So does this mean we can’t eat salted fish anymore?
“People don’t need to worry too much. It (cancer) has to do with how often you eat certain foods and how much of them you eat,” Huang said. If you really like eating salted fish, you can eat a small amount once or twice a month. Meanwhile, you should also eat more fruit and vegetables that are rich in vitamin C, as this can help to prevent the formation of nitrites.
In fact, there are many foods that we often eat that are thought to cause cancer, such as pickles (咸菜), areca palm (槟榔), certain fried foods and even red meat, such as pork, lamb and beef.
Although these foods can potentially cause cancer, it doesn’t mean a person will get cancer just from eating them, according to the World Health Organization.
Cancer is caused by many different factors, such as one’s genes (基因), environment, lifestyle and eating habits. If one has a balanced diet, one doesn’t need to avoid cancer-causing foods entirely, Fang Yu, a doctor from the Beijing Cancer Hospital, told People’s Daily.
34. Why is salted fish popular in south China?

35. Salted fish may cause cancer when _____.
A. it is cooked with salt
B. the salt in it turns into nitrites
C. people eat too much of it

A. Stop eating salted fish from now on.
B. Have a small amount of the salted fish every day.
C. Go to see the doctor if you don’t feel well.
D. Eat more fruit and vegetables to get more vitamin C.
37. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. People should find a better place to live.
B. People who have a balanced diet will not get cancer.
C. Food itself can’t make people get cancer.
D. One doesn’t need to avoid eating cancer-causing food.

Everyone loves a good listener. Communication is important for strong relationships. However, if you don't truly listen to others, it can be difficult to communicate. Working on your listening skills can help you communicate better. The advice below may be of some value.
Give the speaker your full attention
It's important to make the speaker feel heard and valued.
Turn off the TV, put away your phone. Never think about other things when someone is talking. Instead, focus(聚焦) only on what he is saying. Communication will be better if you are able to have a true understanding of the other person's opinions.
Make sure to show you're listening . Nod as the speaker talks, smile and laugh properly. Even, the way you look at the speaker, makes a big difference.
Be patient enough
Do not cut in on the speaker. Always allow a few seconds of silence after someone finishes talking before offering your reply. This allows you to make sure the speaker is done talking.
Avoid hurrying the speaker. Don’t rush the person talking. Never say things like, "Can you get to the point?" This will make it seem like you have nothing to do with the conversation.
Hold your fire
When someone just wants to talk, you don’t need to tell him or her what to do. Try to understand how the person feels and why he does so.
It's never a good idea to listen with judgment. Even if you disagree with his or her actions or opinions, avoid saying he or she is wrong. Otherwise, your communication may end with an argument(争吵). When you “win” the argument, you may lose something far more valuable.
Therefore, it’s necessary to work hard to improve your communication skills.
